Ralph Rapson

Ralph Rapson was an architect and furniture designer. Born in Michigan in 1914, Rapson earned architecture degrees at the University of Michigan and the Cranbrook Academy of Art, where he studied under Eliel Saarinen and met and worked with Charles Eames and Harry Bertoia. His design style is predominantly modernist, with Rapson himself describing his work as, “not too far off from Bauhaus principles.” His designs are strongly oriented toward people, rather than abstract principles, with each piece considering how people live. Rapson was the recipient of the Gold Medal from the Minnesota Society of Architects and the winner of the Dwell Magazine Lounge Chair Design Competition in 2007. His collection with Loll Designs was redesigned by his son, Toby, to incorporate eco-friendly materials.
