The fluid lines of the first flexible cantilevered chair are recreated in the Vitra Miniature MR 20. It was in 1927 that Mies van der Rohe improved on the cantilever design innovated by Mart Stam just a year earlier. Instead of rigidly reinforcing bends, van der Rohe was able to use the elasticity of steel tubing to his advantage, creating MR 20's sweeping and subtly bouncy--yet still structurally strong--curves.
