The Karim Rashid Story
Born in 1960 in Cairo, Egypt, Karim Rashid has since become one of the most world's most prolific designers. Rashid composes his designs based on a firmly-held belief that people could and should be living in a completely different world, one that is filled with contemporary and inspiring places and things. That’s no small wish, but Rashid is well on his way to creating the contemporary world he seeks.
He has over 3000 designs currently in production for AXO Light, George Kovacs, Alessi, Kundalini and more--including lighting, home accessories and furniture--and he is showing no signs of slowing down.
Why We Love Karim Rashid
Karim Rashid designs are at once fun, exciting and thought-provoking. Their use of vibrant color and exceedingly fluid forms showcase an ethos of affordable, democratic design (in other words, one that is accessible to everyone). This holds true for his various interior designs as well as for the products he creates. As arguably the most productive designer of his generation, Rashid is also one of its most outspoken. He has written several monographs outlining his design philosophy, including, among others, KarimSpace, Evolution, and I Want to Change the World.

Karim Rashid's fluid, free-from mode of design is especially evident in contemporary lighting fixtures like the soft, molded white acrylic ITRE Trex Wall Sconce, the bulbous grid-shaped Kwark Ceiling/Wall Light by Fabbian and the open, amoeba-like Kundalini Bokka collection. He also takes a colorful, artistic approach to anatomy with the split-head design of the Knowledge in the Brain Bookends by Menu.
In His Own Words
"Design is about the betterment of our lives poetically, aesthetically, experientially, sensorially and emotionally. My real desire is to see people live in the modus of our time, to participate in the contemporary world, and to release themselves from nostalgia."
