THE MODERN LIFE CONCEPT HOUSE
By ELLE DECOR
Lumens has partnered with ELLE DECOR Magazine on the custom designed 2013 ELLE DECOR Modern Life Concept House: A 7-bedroom, 10,000 square foot waterfront home on Miami's Sunset Island. Eight top design firms were selected by ELLE DECOR to put their mark on the tropical modern estate, and as the exclusive lighting sponsor, Lumens and our brand partners helped them choose the just-right lighting for their one-of-kind spaces.

My aesthetic is: Smart, soothing, and well layered.
I found inspiration in? Traditional and "expected" color and design motifs of Florida and reinterpreted them in my own modern sense. I tried to design each room to a specific client while keeping a cohesive feel between all spaces by using washed out pastel colors and strong geometric and bold forms.
Why did you choose the lighting you did? I chose all modern but clean lined and shaped lamps. All very minimal and subtle but still strong in form and impact.
My favorite part of this project was? This project pushed me to use a lot of color — more than I was comfortable using. I also designed some spectacular furniture pieces—such as the rock console bar I made using ONLY rock salt and dyed concrete. I also designed some very cool geometric chairs made of washed out cerused oak in different colors with brass, leather, and copper details.
The thing I love most about Miami is: That you can use a lot of color. It's fresh and modern. And can be done in a very sophisticated way.

My aesthetic is: I'm a modernist at heart and I like a timeless aesthetic, but have a secret passion for intellectual clutter...
I found inspiration in: The architecture and client profile from Elle Décor.
Why did you choose the lighting you did? I wanted to use classic lighting and chose the Tizio (by Artemide) and Taccia (by Flos) for their iconic designs. I chose the Moooi Horse Lamp as it too, will be a contemporary classic and for its humor; as the clients are not only sophisticated, she also owns an art gallery, so I thought the humor would not be wasted.
My favorite part of this project was: Creating a space I would really enjoy spending time in.
The thing I love most about Miami is: I love the light and its casually elegant energy.
Where did you find inspiration for this space? The architecture and the beautiful views was my main inspiration. I wanted to create a space that was comfortable yet sophisticated and would not take away from the exterior views.
Why did you choose the lighting you did? The lighting was to create a beautiful ambience over the kitchen island and functional light for the sitting areas. I was able to do so with the sculptured glass pendants as well as with the glass stemmed floor lamp with a simple drum shade.
What’s was your favorite part of this project? Meeting and collaborating with everyone from ELLE DECOR, the developer and builder of the house, the amazingly talented peers and designers. We simply had a great time together.
What do you love about Miami (when it comes to design/inspiration/etc)? The light , the light, the light. We have such rays here and everything becomes more vibrant and vivid with the Florida light. I choose my paint colors and fabrics very differently here than I do on projects in other places around the country.

I found inspiration in: I find inspiration all around me. The Show House has such great space and wonderful flow I decided to do a lot of layers in all the rooms. Of course I had inspiration from all of the excellent vendors I was exposed to during this project.
Why did you choose the lighting you did? I wanted to bring warmth to the rooms, an earthiness.
My favorite part of this project was: Each room had its moments as being my favorite; the Edge wallpaper in the powder room or the incredible onyx dining table, or the combination of all the different fabrics & textures in the bedroom.
The thing I love most about Miami is: That it is edgy, earthy, perfect and flawed all at once. The energy here is unstoppable; no other place like it.
