Marcel Wanders loves his audience, and he loves the challenges his audience presents to him as a designer of lighting and home furnishings. "If there's a single reason why design is so important to me," he says, "it is probably the potential it gives me to inspire, to contribute to the concept of a world changing in the direction my heart and head want to go."
What Wanders has discovered in his quest to affect change is that it cannot be forced or dictated by one individual. The Marcel Wanders design philosophy is based on a kind of contemporary humanism; he lets the dreams, hopes and aspirations of his public inspire his designs, and vice versa. It's a mutually beneficial relationship, with the both the audience and designer moving each other forward.
Training in Holland in the 1980s, Wanders saw mass production and technology worship as dictating the direction of design more than the actual needs of the public. Troubled by this trend, he aimed to approach things in a more personal way. His fame began in 1996 with his design of the Knotted Chair, which blended together the traditional craft of macrame with high-tech fibers and epoxy. Since then, he has designed for a number of contemporary European design manufacturers including Alessi,
Droog, B&B Italia, Flos Lighting, Cappellini and Moooi, of which he also co-owner and art director.
Through Marcel Wanders Studio and Moooi, Marcel Wanders lighting fixtures, home appliances and furniture are crafted with unique details for the inspiration and betterment of all who use them. Just some of these include the unexpected floral-patterned plaster interior of the
Flos Skygarden Suspension, the airy fiberglass construction of the Moooi Random Light and the playful, lifelike Moooi Rabbit Lamp.
