Karim Rashid composes his designs based on a firmly-held belief that people could and should be living in a completely different world, one that is filled with contemporary and inspiring places and things. "Design is about the betterment of our lives poetically, aesthetically, experientially, sensorially and emotionally," Rashid says. "My real desire is to see people live in the modus of our time, to participate in the contemporary world, and to release themselves from nostalgia?"

That's no small wish, but Rashid is well on his way to creating the contemporary world he seeks. With over 3000 designs currently in production, Karim Rashid is one of the most prolific designers of his generation, and he is showing no signs of slowing down.

Rashid's designs are notable for their use of vibrant color and exceedingly fluid forms, showcasing an ethos of affordable, democratic design (in other words, one that is accessible to everyone). This holds true for his interior designs as well as for his creation of home accessories, furniture and lighting fixtures. The Karim Rashid Designs fluid, free-from mode of design is especially evident in lighting fixtures like the ITRE Trex Wall Sconce, the Foscarini Blob S Collection and the extensive George Kovacs Soft Collection.

In his spare time, Rashid dabbles in DJ'ing, art and fashion. He has also written several monographs outlining his design philosophy, including, among others, KarimSpace, Evolution, and I Want to Change the World.
